Receiving postcards!

This morning students of class I D could read all the postcards that have arrived from France, Turkey, Spain, Britain and Italy. They were really very happy and it was like a party! After we read all the postcards we went to the language room and changed the postcards on the poster. All the students were enthusiastic of this activity and I'm happy too because this project motivates them in learning as much English as possible and rouses their curiosity.

Chatting with Turkish and Polish teenagers

Yesterday evening some students of class II A and I had an other chat session with our Polish and Turkish friends. We had the chance of practicing English and of knowing more about the culture of our friends. In fact we came to know that yesterday, 23rd April, in Turkey it was Children day. The students read poems for this events. We told them something about the school trip to Milan and we chatted about our favouritte music, singers, football players and so on. In this way we discovered how many things we have in common and also cultural traditions.

About 23rd April

"The 23rd April is Children’s Festival a children’s festival which was gifted to Turkish children by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Turkey, to mark the opening of the Assembly. The festival has been celebrated internationally since 1979. The Children’s Festival was first celebrated in Turkey on 23 April 1920, when the Turkish Grand National Assembly was opened. The Festival intends to contribute to the creation of a world where children can live peacefully by developing sentiments of fraternity, love and friendship.
The greatest aspiration of Atatürk, who saved his country from occupations and introduced reforms in all fields hence changing the viewpoint of the nation it was modernization, in other words, an industrialized country that the industry of the Republic which it was founded on was out of date and poorly equipped, Ataturk endeavored to achieve modernization through educational reform, and thus entrusted Turkey to the children and the youth. Atatürk knew that modernization could not be achieved in a rapid way; therefore, he presumed that the Turkish children educated at schools resting upon positive sciences could attain his goals. He believed his nation and lived for what he believed. This is the main philosophy of the 23rd April. As can be seen, the educated children and youth have made great contributions to the creation of modern Turkey". (From wikipedia)

Saying gooddbye!

Tuesday last week our Spanish friends had to go back to Spain and we greeted them at school. We took a lot of pictures, we kissed and hugged and we also cried! Yes we cried! In fact after 10 days together we had the chance of getting close and become friends and now we are all sorry we have to part.
But this friendship can continue in the years as we can keep on writing, chatting and sending messages; we can also travel and go to see each other just like Laura, one of the girls from last year, did last summer  together with her family, as you can se in this old post.

Coming back from the school trip!

Some minutes ago one of the students, who is coming back from the school trip to Milan, called me and told me everything went very well and that everybody is really happy.
We hope to see the pictures of the trip very soon and we are also curious to see the teachers and listen to them too!

The winning brochure

The students of class II A created three different brochures for the Comenius Project. They put together all the info their friends from last year and some 3rd year students of this year gathered about the following villages: Giove, Penna in Teverina, Alviano, Attigliano and Lugnano in Teverina.
All the three brocures were realy very nice and it was hard to choose one but we did it. The brochure you see here is the same the students gave to the mayors of the city councils and that our headmistress delivered to our Spanish friends of the Comenius Project last week.

Yesterday some 2nd year students created a poster where to display the brochure in class.

Day trip to Assisi

Yesterday was the last day our Spanish friends were here and before they went back to Jerez de la Frontera we wanted to show them an other beautiful place so, as we had already planned, we went to Assisi. The students of class I D explained the history of the town and the most important churches together with some episodes of the lives of St. Francis and St. Clare. In the afternoon we visited the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli then we proceeded to the Clitumno Springs where the students of class I C told us the story of this romantic place.
Despite the awful forecast for the day we had nice weather and wonderful time together!

The dinner party!

Friday night we had a fantastic dinner party. Some very nice and kind people of the "Pro-loco" of Attigliano cooked a delicious dinner for us and the parents prepared wonderful cakes!
We had nice time together with the students, the families, the mayors of the villages of our school, the teachers and the headmistress.
After dinner we sang and danced thanks to Carlos, who played the guitar, and Teresa who taught us Spanish dances.
The headmistress gave each Spanish student a present to remember this great adventure!
Sara, an Italian student, and Marina, a Spanish student, thanked everybody for the unique experience they and their mates are having and the headmistress underlined the importance of the Comenius Project as a chance of making friends throughout Europe, practicing English and realizing the importance of mastering a foreign language to communicate and to create lasting links among people.

We all really know that this will be an unforgettable experience for everybody!

In Alviano

Friday afternoon we went to Alviano where we visited the castle, the chapel dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi and where we met the deputy mayor. He welcomed us and showed us the mayor's office where we could experiment a very interesting phenomenon: in fact we whispered in a corner of the room and people at the other side could hear what we said very clearly! Then he also showed us a secret passage through very steep steps that from the main square led to the mayor's office.

In Lugnano

On Friday morning we took our Spanish friends to Lugnano and the students of class I D showed them the school. Later we went around the village to see the most important places of interest and at 10.00 am we had the chance of watching "Much ado about nothing" by William Shakespeare at the theatre. Most students knew the story because they had seen the movie and read a handout, in this way they could follow the show  with attention and interest. To know more about the play you can see this old post.

In Attigliano

Last Thursday afternoon we went to Attigliano where the pupils of primary school made a concert.
After the concert we went to the city council where the mayor welcomed us, gave presents to Spanish teachers and students and we gave him the touristic brochure we created.
We also had a walk and listened to the history of the village.

Firenze, Florence, Florencia

Yesterday we went to Florence together with our Spanish friends.

The weather wasn't very nice and it rained "cats and dogs" while we were inside the Uffizi Gallery. We had the chance to see beautiful paintings and the Italian students have been great tourist guides. In fact they explained the most important paintings in English, some other students told info about Palazzo Vecchio in French and teacher Paolo gave us full explanation on Santa maria Novella, on the Cathedral and on the awesome statue of David by Michelangelo!

After all this "culture" we went walking in the rain and had a delicious ice cream!

For the description of the paintings in the Uffizi Gallery you can go to this post
For the other pictures we took in Florence .... you'll find more in the website of our school in the followings weeks!

Piediluco Lake and Marmore Waterfalls

Piediluco
Today we went to Piediluco (where we visited both the lake and the village) and Marmore Waterfalls. The beauty of the nature in these places is really astonishing and we can understand why a lot of poets and artists used to stop here during their "grand tour". In front of the Waterfalls we can see a monument to Lord Byron (a very famous English poet) who, having stopped here, wrote some verses on this waterfall:

“The crash of waters! From its rocky heights the Velino ventures through the water flushed precipes. Waterfalls! As fast as light, the shimmering mass of water foams, shaking the abyss. Hell of waters! There where they cry out and hiss and bubble in their eternal torture; while the sweat of their immense agony sqeezed by their Flagetonte, embraces the black rocks that surround the abyss, spread with tremendous horror..”
George Byron
“Childe Harolds Pilgrimage”

When we visited the lake we went on a boat trip and in the middle of it we made an experiment: we shouted the words "ciao" and "hola" and we heard the "echo"!

Piediluco lake

In this picture Eva Maria is telling that according to the legend, the nymph Nera had fallen in love with a shepherd, Velino, but Juno as a punishment for that love story, transformed her into a river, the Nera. Velino, anguished, threw himself down from the Marmore cliff in order to be united with his beloved: that mortal jump would continue for eternity: what a love story!

Teachers or tourists?

Today I've been a tourist together with the Spanish teachers, the headmaster and our families.
The Comenius Project is not only an exchange of students but even of teachers! So, today, while the students were having fun together with their host families, we (the teachers) went to Viterbo and we had the chance of talking about what we do at school but also to visit a really beautiful town.

Here you can find more info about Viterbo.
